La câțiva kilometri de Darabani, în comuna Horodiștea, s-a născut în 1913 Ilie, cel care avea să devină Sfântul Ioan Iacob Hozevitul. Casa în care el și-a petrecut copilăria este la numai câteva minute de Darabani și este deschisă turiștilor și credincioșilor, fiind amenajată ca și casă memorială (foto aici).
Sfântul Ioan Iacob de la Neamţ s-a născut la 23 iulie 1913 în satul Crăiniceni, comuna Horodiştea, într-o familie de ţărani credincioşi, pe nume Maxim şi Ecaterina. La botez a primit numele Ilie.
Părinții săi mor devreme: mama la sașe luni de la nașterea micuțului Ilie, iar tatăl doi ani mai târziu, în Primul Război Mondial. Ilie rămâne în grija bunicii sale Maria și a rudelor apropiate. Primii ani de şcoală îi face în satul natal, apoi urmează gimnaziul la Lipcani-Hotin şi liceul la Cozmeni-Cernăuţi, fiind cel mai bun elev din şcoală.
Pe când avea 10 ani, rudele hotărăsc să-l dea pe Ilie la facultatea de Teologie din Cernăuţi, ca să devină preot. El însă decide să devină călugăr, după ce, conform legendei, Dumnezeu însuși îi indică aceasta cale. Pleacă la Mănăstirea Neamț, unde Episcopul Nicodim îi rânduielte ascultare la infirmerie şi la biblioteca mănăstirii. Slujește aici până în 1936, perioadă întreruptă numai de anul petrecut la Dorohoi (’34-’35) pentru stagiul militar.
La 8 aprilie 1936 primește numele de călugărie Ioan și pleacă într-un pelerinaj în Ţara Sfântă, apoi slujește timp de zece ani în Mănăstirea Sfântul Sava de lângă Betleem, ca paracliser și ca infirmier. Scrie învăţături şi versuri duhovniceşti pe care le trimite fraţilor săi din Ţara Sfântă sau le dă pelerinilor români care veneau spre închinare la Mormântul Domnului.
În1939-1940 Ioan Iacob se retrage într-o peşteră din pustiul Qumran, aproape de Marea Moartă, unde obişnuia să se roage noaptea, singur, hrănindu-se doar cu pesmeţi şi puţine fructe. Anul următor în petrece într-un lagăr pe Muntele Măslinilor, ca urmare a celui de al doilea război mondial.
Eliberat, se întoarce la Mănăstirea Sfântul Sava şi continuă aceleaşi ascultări şi nevoinţe. În anul 1947 este hirotonit diacon, la 13 mai, în Biserica Sfântului Mormânt, cu aprobarea Patriarhului României. În acelaşi an, Cuviosul Ioan Iacob este hirotonit preot în biserica Sfântului Mormânt, fiind numit de Patriarhia Română egumen la Schitul românesc Sfântul Ioan Botezătorul de pe valea Iordanului.
Timp de 5 ani, Cuviosul Ioan Iacob a săvârşit zilnic toate sfintele slujbe, în limba română, a tradus numeroase pagini din Sfinţii Părinţi cu învăţături pentru călugări şi pelerini,a compus un bogat volum de versuri duhovniceşti, a înnoit chiliile şi biserica schitului şi, mai ales, viaţa duhovnicească din schit, ostenindu-se mult pentru primirea pelerinilor din ţară, pe care îi spovedea, îi împărtăşea şi le dădea sfaturi mântuitoare de suflet. Noaptea, însă, se nevoia singur, neştiut de nimeni, fie în chilie, fie ieşind să se roage pe valea Iordanlui, încercând să urmeze, după putere, Cuvioasei Maria Egipteanca. Singurul său ucenic statornic era monahul Ioanichie, pe care l-a cunoscut în peștera de la Marea Moartă.
În noiembrie 1952, Cuviosul Ioan Sihastrul se retrage din ascultarea de egumen şi, împreună cu ucenicul său Ioanichie, intră în obştea mănăstirii Sfântul Gheorghe Hozevitul din pustiul Hozeva, pe valea pârâului Cherit (Horat). Din vara anului 1953, Ioan se retrage cu ucenicul la o peşteră din apropiere, numită Chilia Sfintei Ana.
Cuviosul Ioan mânca o dată în zi, pesmeţi, măsline, smochine şi bea puţină apă, iar noaptea dormea câteva ore, pe o scândură, având o piatră drept pernă. În vara anului 1960, simţindu-şi sfârşitul aproape, miercuri 4 august, s-a împărtăşit cu Sfintele Taine, iar joi dimineaţa la orele 5 şi-a dat sufletul, la vârsta de numai 47 de ani.
După trei zile, a fost înmormântat în peştera în care a și murit, iar 20 de ani mai târziu, în 1980, s-au făcut pregătirile pentru mutarea osemintelor sale în cimitirul mănăstirii. „Parcă l-am fi pus în mormânt de câteva ceasuri, ba nici ceasuri, ci chiar acum”, a spus Arhimandritul Amfilohie la vederea moaștelor Cuviosului Ioan. Trupul său a fost descoperit intact, „aflat întreg, nestricat de vreme, răspândind bună mireasmă, semn că l-a preamărit Dumnezeu şi l-a numărat în ceata sfinţilor, pentru nevoinţa şi sfinţenia vieţii sale de pe pământ”.
Sfântul Sinod al Bisericii Ortodoxe Române l-a trecut în rândul sfinţilor, la data de 20-21 iunie, 1992, sub numele de „Sfântul Ioan Iacob de la Neamţ”, fixându-i-se zi de prăznuire 5 august, data mutării lui la cele veşnice.
