Nu este câtuşi de puţin exclus ca pe teritoriul actual al oraşului Darabani să fi existat o biserică încă din vremea domniei lui Ştefan cel Mare. Informaţia ne vine nu pe cale documentar-ştiinţifică, ci dintr-un izvor literar în care, e drept, realitatea se poate combina cu ficţiunea. E vorba de romanul „Vuiau codrii Moldovei” de Radu Vişan (Editura Militară, Bucureşti, 1958), unde, evocându-se luptele cu turcii din 1476, se menţionează (pag. 130): „La Darabani au luat şi clopotul de la biserica lui Sf. Nicolae, de au sleit arama pentru vârfuri de săgeţi”. Cu siguranţă, autorul cărţii se bizuia pe un minim material documentar, aşa că trebuie să admitem că pomenirea unei anumite biserici şi nu o alta, nu poate fi cu totul întâmplătoare. Că aşezarea exista la acea dată, nu încape îndoială, dacă interpretăm logic şi corect un zapis, cunoscut pentru localnici, de întărire a proprietăţii emis de Petru Rareş la 1546. Şi se ştie că boierii moldoveni, cu frică de Dumnezeu şi credincioşi prin educaţie, construiau numaidecât biserici acolo unde, pe moşiile lor, se constituiau comunităţi umane stabile.
Dacă în 1476 existenţa unei biserici la Darabani este doar prezumtivă, nu la fel stau lucrurile în 1569, când Bogdan Voievod întărea lui Ionaşcu păhărnicel dreptul de proprietate la Darabani (Căbiceni) pentru „părţile de sus, unde a fost curtea lui Ivanco, despre biserică”. Acum e clar că sătenii aveau aici, în folosul lor, locaş de închinăciune propriu. Conform surselor documentare, în 1772 la Darabani existau cinci slujitori ai bisericii, fără să ştim cu exactitate dacă măcar unul dintre aceştia funcţiona la Corneşti, sat cu biserică probabilă, alipit la Darabani de către logofătul Lupu Balş. Peste 2 ani, la 1774, serviciul liturgic este asigurat de preoţii Toderaşco şi Gavrilaş, împreună cu diaconul Ioniţă, iar la 1825 vorbim de parohul Ioan, cu dovedite lecturi de literatură laică. Presupunem că în decursul celor câteva secole, de la menţionata biserică din 1569, în Darabani au funcţionat şi alte locaşuri , având în vedere precaritatea edificiilor, toate construite cu materiale prea puţin rezistente. Alta ar fi fost durata vieţii lor dacă aveau ziduri din piatră sau cărămidă, ca în atâtea cazuri cunoscute. Abia la 1837 se înalţă la Darabani o impozantă biserică la construcţia căreia se folosesc dalele de piatră li cărămida. Probabil la acea vreme era încă în picioare vechiul locaş, situat pe locul actualei pieţi, unde exista, după tradiţie, şi cimitirul comunităţii. Nu ştim dacă după târnosirea bisericii „Sfântul Nicolae” (1840) s-au mai oficiat slujbe şi în locaşul cel vechi şi cu siguranţă şubrezit. Cert este că în 1937, când se aniversa centenarul târgului, un sobor de preoţi oficia o slujbă de pomenire pentru morţii din fostul cimitir, unde mai existau încă ruine ale vechii biserici.
Şi dacă la 1772 vorbeam de probabilitatea unui locaş de închinare la Corneşti, în vremea lui Cuza-Vodă, cu ocazia împroprietăririi satelor, aflăm că aici trăia preotul D. Ghiorghiescu, răsplătit cu 9 fălci şi 12,5 prăjini de pământ pentru slujba sa de la biserica din sat sau la cea din Teioasa, cu care în câteva rânduri, de-a lungul vremii, alcătuia o parohie.
