Genealogia și copilăria

Theodor Balș s-a născut la Iași în 1790 într-o familie de mari boieri moldoveni, figuri importante ale scenei politice și sociale din acele vremuri:

  • Constantin „Ciuntul” Balș (tată): fost caimacam (locțiitor de domnitor) al Moldovei;
  • Iordache Balș (unchi după tată): fost mare vistier (ministru de finanțe) și mare vornic (ministru de interne) al Moldovei; proprietar al moșiei de la Dumbrăveni – Suceava, unde l-a avut ca administrator pe tatăl lui Mihai Eminescu, Gheorghe Eminovici;
  • Lupu Balș (bunic după tată): fost vornic (ministru de interne);
  • Teodor „Todiriță” Balș (văr drept): fost caimacam al Moldovei, cunoscut pentru desființarea mai multor instituții ale statului (între ele Facultatea de Drept de la Iași, seminarul și gimnaziul Mănăstirii Neamț, Banca Națională de la Iași) și pentru convingerile sale anti-unioniste;
  • Anița Catargi (mamă): descendetă a familiei Catargiu.

Theodor Balș (cunoscut și sub numele de „Toderaș” pentru a fi diferențiat de Teodor „Toderiță” Balș, fostul caimacam anti-unionist), și-a petrecut copilăria la Iași. A studiat tot la Iași, pregătindu-se pentru o carieră în administrație și în politică, asemenea înaintașilor lui.

Căsătoria și descendenții

Căsătoria lui Theodor Balș cu Maria (Marghiolița) Bogdan a fost una foarte lungă, însă nu la fel de fericită. Se pare că firea curioasă și aventuroasă a Mariei n-a făcut casă bună cu stilul zbuciumat de viață al lui Theodor, mereu prins cu treburile domniei.

Cei doi se îndepărtaseră atât de mult încât Maria Balș a ajuns să părăsească domiciului conjugal din Iași fără știrea soțului ei pentru lungi excursii în Europa, sub pretextul nevoii de a efectua varii tratamente. Nemulțumit de purtarea soției, Theodor îi scrie mitropolitului Moldovei, cerându-i să-l sfătuiască și să intervină. Mitropolitul îi scrie o scrisoare de ultimatum contesei, cerându-i să revină grabnic acasă, sub amenințarea separării.

Un alt episod interesant se petrece la Chișinău, când boierii moldoveni se refugiaseră o vreme dincolo de Prut de teama Eteriei. În capitala Basarabiei, devenită în acea perioadă un paradis al distracțiilor mondene pentru boierii ieșeni refugiați, are loc o întâlnire memorabilă între Theodor și Maria Balș, pe de o parte, și celebrul poet rus Puskin, pe de alta. Dacă Maria (Marghiolița) avea deja renumele unei femei mai libertine decât i-ar fi stat bine unei contese căsătorite, Puskin dobândise la Chișinău prestigiul unui abonat al duelurilor pornite din te-miri-ce. Fiindcă Marghiolița a răspuns cu agresivitate la avansurile pe care i le făcuse Puskin, rusul s-a hotărât să-i ceară soțului ei socoteală pentru impolitețea nevestei. Pălmuit și invitat la duel de către Puskin, se pare că Theodor Balș n-ar fi răspuns provocării cu aceeași îndrăzneală. Duelul a fost evitat și conflictul aplanat prin poruncă de la stăpânirea rusă, care l-ar fi pus mai întâi pe Puskin sub arest la domiciliu, apoi l-ar fi repatriat sub escortă.

Acest gen de evenimente conjugale n-au fost menite să le inspire în bine pe cele două fete ale cuplului boieresc. Smaranda (Esmeralda) și Ana au avut la rândul lor căsătorii zbuciumate, ba și câte un divorț fiecare.

Câteva decenii mai târziu fetele aveau să risipească, puțin câte puțin, averea tatălui lor. Spre finalul secolului al XIX-lea Smaranda avea să vândă moșia de la Darabani, iar Ana – proprietățile de la Piatra Neamț, unde Theodor Balș deținuse jumătate din târg. Aceeași soartă aveau să o aibă și terenurile din mahalaua Păcurari a Iașilor, și ea deținută cândva de fostul hatman.

    however what if you added a title that grabbed a person’s attention? I mean Theodor Balș:

    You might look at Yahoo’s front page and see how they write article titles to get people
    to click. You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to get readers excited about what you’ve got to
    say. Just my opinion, it would bring your blog a little bit more interesting.
