Ceea ce pentru noi, maturii, apare ca un fapt cunoscut și chiar arhicunoscut, pentru cei mici constituie o noutate indiscutabilă cu care își ilustrează conștiința, fără alt efort decât cel al recepționării unor nume și întâmplări, interesante, atrăgătoare și dragi.”
Pentru români, Al Doilea Război Mondial a început la 22 iunie 1941 şi s-a terminat pe 9 mai 1945, în ziua de Paşte.
Născut la data de 10 noiembrie 1923, veteran Al Celui De-al Doilea Război Mondial, Gheorghe Apachiţei a fost recrutat în armată pe când avea 20 de ani. Deși instructajul obișnuit înaintea plecării pe front ar fi trebuit să dureze 12 luni, împărțite în două perioade, urgența situației de pe câmpul de luptă a făcut ca soldatul Apachiței să ajungă pe front după numai o lună de instrucție.
Regimentul 23 „Vânători de munte”, căruia i s-a alăturat dărăbăneanul Apachiței, făcea parte din Armata a XII-a, condusă de generalul german Schorner, care avea să devină mai târziu field-mareșal.
La puțin timp de la încorporare și la capătul unui marș de trei zile de la Darabani la Iași, Gheorghe Apachiței avea să ia parte la o luptă lungă și grea, la nord de capitala Moldovei. După două săptămâni de luptă în prima linie, la ofensiva rușilor, Apachiței a fost rănit la genunchiul piciorului drept. Un camarad, pe nume Gheorghe Timiță, i-a sărit în ajutor și l-a dus la mașina Salvării. Apoi soldatul dărăbănean a fost transportat la spitalul “Regina Maria” din Brașov, iar de acolo mutat la spitalul „Timișul de Sus”, pentru a fi stabilizat într-un final la București. A fost externat abia după un an de spitalizare în București și decorat cu mai multe medalii, pe care le amintim mai jos.
Medalia comemorativă A Celui De-al Doilea Razboi Mondial, acordată foștilor combatanți și veterani de război prin decretul nr.64, supra 1967, semnat de președintele României atunci, Emil Constantinescu.- Medalia „Serviciul Credincios” cu spade, acordată gradelor inferioare pentru fapte de vitejie în linia 1 a frontului, uneori acordându-se și un pumnal ce se acordă subofițerilor români, el fiind fabricat la firma “SOLINGEN” din Germania.
- Medalia “Victoria împotriva fascismului”, acordată de autoritațile comuniste foștilor combatanți, în special celor care au luptat după 23 august 1944 în Transilvania, Ungaria și Cehoslovacia.
- „Za pobeda” pentru victoria împotriva fascismului, medalie rusească cu chipul lui Stalin, acordată celor care au luptat în războiul din Apus până la 9 mai 1945 când s-a încheiat războiul în Europa, prin căderea Berlinului.
