În urma lui Theodor Balș
Theodor C. Balș a murit la 4 martie 1867 și este înmormântat la Iași, în biserica Sf. Dimitrie Balș, ctitorită de stră-străbunicul său Ioan, fost vornic al Moldovei. Din arhivele păstrate de avocatul Emil Costeanu aflăm că „extrasul de moarte al lui Theodor C. Balș – nr. 205, obținut dela Of. St. Civile al Municipiului Iași pentru uz oficial, s-a pierdut din Expoziția Centenarului (1937), unde fusese expus”.
Despre Theodor Balș unii contemporani au spus că ar fi fost vanitos, egoist sau lipsit de abilități de conducere. Alții au afirmat că tocmai aceste însușiri l-ar fi păstrat atâția ani în fruntea Moldovei, fiindcă au făcut din el un om pe placul rușilor, deloc incomod puterii de la est.
Căsătoria sa cu Maria se poate să nu fi fost una model. N-au avut descendenți direcți pe linie masculină, iar celor două fete le-au lăsat moștenire proprietăți fărâmițate, încărcate de datorii. Urmașii Anei și ai Smarandei au dispărut în praful istoriei și, odată cu ei, s-a stins și urma genetică a lui Theodor Balș.
Cât de aproape sau de departe de adevăr or fi toate cele de mai sus e greu de spus acum, la un secol și jumătate după ce s-au întâmplat. Un lucru e sigur însă: Theodor Balș a schimbat definitiv și în bine soarta micului târg nordic al Darabanilor.
Copiii contemporanilor lui Balș își mai aminteau poate cum părinții lor îi ieșeau în cale boierului pe culmile Milencii când el venea la Darabani de la Iași, în trăsura lui trasă de patru cai cu hamuri de argint. Își scoteau cușmele și se ploconeau în genunchi în fața „generalului”, povestindu-și fiecare pricinele. Balș îi asculta pe toți, fără să coboare din caleașcă, apoi îi chema la „castel” pentru a-i pune față-n față cu învinovățiții.
Mai apoi, cu fiecare generație, poveștile despre Balș s-au șters, bătând în legendă. Din 1900 încoace ni s-a povestit că o rețea imensă de tuneluri ar împânzi vechiul târg, legând conacul Balș de biserica Sf. Nicolae. Apoi că la vechea poartă „numărul 4” a conacului ar sta îngropată o oală plină cu galbeni, ascunsă de bucătarul generalului, pe nume Forcaș, care nu avea ce face cu atâta bănet. Mai spre anul 2000 am auzit că în noaptea de Înviere clopotele vechii biserici îngână „Balș, Balș” atunci când bat.
De la Balș ne-au rămas trei monumente neprețuite, vertebre în șira spinării Darabanilor. Biserica veche, la fel de frumoasă ca în 1840. Conacul Balș, cu misterele lui, adăpostind azi aproape 50.000 de volume de cărți în biblioteca orașului. Prima școală sătească de stat din istoria țării Moldovei.
Ne-a rămas un oraș încărcat de istorie și de legendă, lăudat în epocă și vizitat de nume mari ale culturii românești. Departe încă de epoca automobilului, Balș ne-a pornit motoarele și ne-a dus departe, lăsându-ne un târg cu cheile în contact. Am știut sau nu să-l conducem cu bine până azi, o vor spune alții, după noi.
Vă las cum am și început, cu vorbele avocatului dărăbănean Emil Costeanu, păstrate în manuscrisele sale din 1937.
Rămâne viitorului și deplinei înțelegeri a fiilor Darabanilor de a se pătrunde de faptele grăitoare ce au purtat gândul lui Balș de a întemeia un oraș pe malul Prutului, așezare vredincă de strălucirea numelui său ce a ilustrat istoria țării Moldovei.”
Numele lui Balș e trecut pe clopotele bisericii vechi din centrul târgului. Înăuntru, pe Evanghelia dăruită bisericii în 1848, și-a lăsat semnătura. Peste drum, urmașii i-au ridicat o statuie, iar de partea cealaltă au numit o stradă cu numele Theodor Balș.
