Într-o poezie din anii ’60 a lui Nicolae Tăutu găsim un episod interesant din legendele Darabanilor. George Enescu însuşi se ia la întrecere cu lăutarii dărăbăneni, la începutul secolului XX.
… S-a oprit în poala serii
Vechi taraful de ţigani
Care-nveselea boierii
La un han din Darabani.
Căci demult, în altă parte,
Merg boierii la desfăt.
Hanul pustiit de moarte
E-ngropat sub un pomăt.
Un bătrân s-a prins, în seară,
Să repare la docar
Şi-alungind şuviţa-i rară
Vorbi cel mai alb scripcar:
– Rogu-ne, di vă e placul,
Să vă zicem doar un cânt.
Nu mi-o prinde rău pitacul.
Să nu-l azvârliţi în vânt!
Au pornit toţi lăutarii
Lângă spuza de coceni,
Să cutremure stejarii
Să-nfioare largi poieni.
Cântecul purta uşure
Mugetul apei din prund,
Geamătul trist de pădure
Când topoare o pătrund…
Când sfârşiră pe tăcute
Le-a întins un pumn de bani;
– N-am văzut atâtea sute
Nici la han la Darabani!
Iar Enescu blând le zise:
– Acum să vă cânt şi eu!
Alb, trezită ca din vise,
Fluturând un curcubeu,
Luna polei urcuşul
Cu o rază de ninsori…
Părăsind în crâng culcuşul
S-adunau privighetori…
Poate-un ceas, sau poate două,
A cântat acolo-n drum
Pe arcuş se prinse rouă
Strunele pluteau în fum.
A tăcut. Dar lăutarii,
Mai departe neclintiţi,
Ascultau vuind stejarii
De cântare răscoliţi.
Mai târziu cu vorbă rară
Starostele cel bătrân
A prins vechea sa vioară.
A scos banii toţi din sân:
– Mai întâi ti rog primeşte,
Ia-ţi tăţi banii înapoi,
Pentru clipele aieste
Plata o s-o facem noi!
Din strămoşi îmi duc vioară,
Şaptezeci de ani în şir
Ea îmi fuse soţioară,
Bruma prinsă la chimir.
Ca un ram viu din copac
O simţeam din al meu trunchi.
Dar amu ţăndări o fac!
Şi o sparse pe genunchi.
A-mpietrit întreaga ceată!
Doar Enescu lăcrăma:
– O asemenea răplată
N-am primit în viaţa mea.
Lauri mulţi fruntea mea poartă,
Nici nu ştiu cum să-i socot,
Dar pe-aceasta niciodată
Ca să-l uit eu n-am să pot!
Îţi întorc azi sărutarea
Pe obrajii arşi de foc.
Şi ca să nu-mi uiţi cântarea
Ia vioara mea în loc.
