Cine îşi mai aminteşte astăzi de Corneliu Popel? Un poet dispărut la doar 28 de ani şi care, ca om, se ţinea, din varii motive, departe de scena publică. S-a născut la Darabani (ianuarie 1950), unde îşi încheie şi studiile liceale. N-a uitat nici el (şi nici noi, colegii şi amicii săi cenaclişti) anii petrecuţi acolo, acasă, unde spiritul tutelar al magistrului Lucian Valea ne îmbăia zilnic în literatură, dîndu-ne aripi şi făcîndu-ne să credem, cu superbia adolescenţei, în viitorul nostru scriitoricesc.

Poate nu întîmplător, ca absolvent de filologie, s-a aşezat temeinic nu la oraş, ci într-un sat din judeţul Iaşi, Ţibana, cu văi şi dealuri, pajişti şi păduri care să-i evoce clipă de clipă ţinutul natal. În plus, într-un sat ca Ţibana avea şansa să întîlnească mai puţină pedanterie şi inşi scorţoşi, plini de ifose cărturăreşti, cum se întîmplă adesea în lumea citadină.
Sărmanul Corneliu! Şi-a transformat pînă şi căsnicia într-o redută, ca să se apere parcă de agresiunea cotidiană a contemporanilor, gata să dea buzna cu bocancii în intimitatea sa atît de fragilă.
Era mai totdeauna singur, trecînd absent pe străzile Iaşului, preocupat exclusiv pe-atunci doar de proiectul său astral: o operă poetică veritabilă, cu timbru propriu, nu atît pentru glorie cît pentru faptul că, printr-un exerciţiu spiritual de visare şi adaptare continuă, îşi modelase existenţa doar ca să poată trăi şi respira poezie.
Într-un veşnic război cu cenzura vremii, Corneliu Popel n-a apucat să tipărească pînă la moartea sa (28 iunie 1978) decît două cărţi de versuri. Alte două s-au tipărit postum. Nu s-a bucurat de mediatizarea actorilor, cîntăreţilor de muzică uşoară sau fotbaliştilor, şi nici măcar de cea a unor confraţi pentru care marketingul literar funcţiona şi atunci cu maximă eficienţă.
În aceste condiţii mă întreb şi vă întreb: cine şi de ce să-şi mai amintească azi de solitarul poet Corneliu Popel?
