Redescoperirea lui Corneliu Popel

toamn\ a Galeriilor Eleusis amintea faptul c\,
`n acea `mprejurare, fusese lansat\ [i edi]ia
bibliofil\ a volumului Boema de fier. „{i cel
f\r\ de prihan\“ de Corneliu Popel, o
extraordinar\ voce liric\ a genera]iei ’80, de
nuan]\ metafizic-spiritualist\, disp\rut\ `nainte
de vreme. Cred c\ aceast\ superb\ apari]ie
editorial\ – selec]ia textelor de Ioan Es. Pop,
`ngrijirea edi]iei de Emil Stratan, cu grafic\
original\ de Valer Sasu, cu splendide coper]i de
lemn – , pe care o dator\m Editurii Eleusis, este
un foarte bun prilej s\ ne amintim de poetul
Corneliu Popel. „Uitarea“ acestuia este cu at`t
mai ciudat\ cu c`t, la cei dou\zeci [i opt de ani
pe care-i avea la trecerea `ntr-o lume mai bun\,
Corneliu Popel era deja un scriitor consacrat,
cu o prezen]\ auctorial\ puternic\ [i original\,
chiar dac\ omul ce purta poetul, se refugiase, la
absolvirea facult\]ii, `nr-un fel de navet\
didactic\ pe drumuri de ]ar\, undeva `n jude]ul
Ia[i. Navet\ ce s-a dovedit a fi „esen]ial\“, de
vreme ce lirismul s\u a devenit parc\ [i mai
esen]ializat, mai emblematic [i oracular.
Corneliu Popel `ncepe s\ publice `n presa
cultural\ la 15 ani, `n anii mici liberaliz\ri a regimului
comunist, este inclus, la nici 18 ani, `n
masiva Antologie a poe]ilor ie[eni din 1968 [i
debuteaz\ cu Fra]ii mei bl`nzi `n 1974, volum
excelent primit de critica literar\, care saluta un
poet interesant [i promi]\tor. Promisiunea avea
s\ fie confirmat\ trei ani mai t`rziu de volumul
Aurea Saecula, de asemenea foarte bine primit.
~mi amintesc, de pild\, paginile dedicate poetului
`n revistele studen]e[ti ie[ene Dialog
(fosta Alma Mater, la care poetul fusese redactor
`n studen]ie) [i Opinia studen]easc\. Ca mai
june confrate, m-am sim]it foarte onorat c`nd lam
cunoscut [i ori de c`te ori – prea rare
prilejuri – am avut ocazia s\ schimb\m `n fug\
c`teva vorbe. Cel mai adesea despre poezie, de
bun\ seam\, `n leg\tur\ cu sensul c\reia ne
`nt`lneam `n cele mai multe privin]e. La un an
dup\ moartea poetului, `n 1979, avea s\ apar\
primul volum postum, pe care autorul apucase,
totu[i, s\-l `ngrijeasc\, Elogiul `n]elepciunii,
prin nimic inferior celorlalte, dac\ nu cumva
chiar superior acelora – de[i e foarte greu s\
faci asemenea ierarhiz\ri `n cazul unui autor
care-[i g\sise propria voce at`t de timpuriu. Trei
volume excep]ionale `n cinci ani s`nt suficiente
pentru a impune un autor. ~n condi]ii normale.
Se pare c\ nu a avut [i nu am avut parte de
condi]ii normale de vreme ce, aproape brusc,
un asemenea autor a intrat aproape `n uitare,
r\m`n`nd mai mult `n memoria prietenilor [i a
colegilor de genera]ie dec`t `n cea a istoriei
literare. Desigur, dispari]ia sa prematur\,
aten]ia pe care a atras-o asupra sa valul de la
1980, cu o poezie at`t de diferit\ de cea lui
Popel, pot explica `n oarecare m\sur\ uitarea,
dar n-o justific\ prin nimic. ~n fond, `n cuprinsul
artelor, noul nu se substituie vechiului, ci doar
se adaug\, oric`t de „revolu]ionar“ s-ar manifesta.
~n fond, apari]ia lui Mircea C\rt\rescu
nu anuleaz\ existen]a unor Virgil Mazilescu sau
Daniel Turcea. ~n mod firesc, nici apari]ia unor
Danilov [i Lucian Vasiliu, ca s\ dau doar dou\
nume importante din genera]ia mea, de la Ia[i,
nu s`nt menite s\-i pun\ `n umbr\ pe un Mihai
Ursachi sau Corneliu Popel. {i `nc\ primul a
avut m\car [ansa unei vie]i ceva mai lungi [i a
unor prieteni mai fideli.
Volumul recent ap\rut la Galeriile Eleusis, o
selec]ie realizat\ de poetul cu formul\ `nrudit\
Ioan Es. Pop din manuscrisele puse cu amabilitate
la dispozi]ie de doamna Rodica Popel, so-
]ia poetului, este `ntrutotul consubstan]ial corpusului
liric deja tip\rit. Un volum care confirm\
originalitatea [i pregnan]a vocii lirice pe
care a lansat-o Corneliu Popel `n poezia ultimei
jum\t\]i de veac. Aceea[i simplitate aparent\,
asumat\ cu autentic\ umilitate, pentru a vorbi,
cum nu se poate mai profund, despre lucrurile
cu adev\rat esen]iale: „Glasul frumos/ al t\u
prin ziduri/ cum sun\ `necat de boal\/ `n ve[nica
mea amintire“, cum declar\ versurile parc\ premonitorii
din poemul care deschide culegerea
de fa]\. Sau ca `n acest scurt, emblematic,
Epitaf: „Mi-am zburat, se pare, ieri, creierul,
[tii?/ cu mutra mea de sinuciga[ ur`t/ nu mai
f\cusem nici dou\ parale,/ acuma stau `n inim\-
[i-at`t“. A[ mai cita [i Amorul c\l\ului, pentru
impecabila prozodie, o alt\ calitate a poeziei lui
Popel, de care autorul n-a abuzat, totu[i, pentru
c\ nu `l interesau exerci]iile de virtuozitate dec`
t atunci c`nd nu lezau autenticitatea: „Mustr\
ri de con[tiin]\, r\m\[i]e/ pe caldar`m [i-n
cr`[mele murdare/ lovind cu capul `n destin/ a[a
`mi vine o vreme de sp`nzur\toare// voi trubaduri
c`nta]i amorul/ acestei patimi mari de cavaler/
cu gravitatea c`nd se `nconjoar\/ hamalul
meu de ghe]uri [i de cer// o glasu-acela sp`nzur`
nd prea trist/ iubind un minstru `n canale/
plebeu fugar `ntr-un sicriu/ a[tept`nd noaptea
sunetelor triumfale“.
Cred c\ pu]inele versuri citate confirm\
autenticitatea [i valoarea lui Corneliu Popel.
Din p\cate, edi]ia de fa]\, bibliofil\ [i scump\
fiind, nu este dec`t la `ndem`na unui num\r
foarte mic de cititori. Nu pot dec`t s\ sper c\ fie
editura Eleusis, fie o alt\ editur\ se va g`ndi [i
la o edi]ie obi[nuit\ a volumului [i, `n viitor, cu
pu]in noroc, [i la o edi]ie de opere complete.
Corneliu Popel este un poet prea bun pentru a-l
condamna la uitare.

În numărul trecut, o notă redacţională despre manifestările legate de lansarea stagiunii de toamnă a Galeriilor Eleusis amintea faptul că, în acea împrejurare, fusese lansată şi ediţia bibliofilă a volumului Boema de fier. „Şi cel fără de prihană“ de Corneliu Popel, o extraordinară voce lirică a generaţiei ’80, de nuanţă metafizic-spiritualistă, dispărută înainte de vreme. Cred că această superbă apariţie editorială – selecţia textelor de Ioan Es. Pop, îngrijirea ediţiei de Emil Stratan, cu grafică originală de Valer Sasu, cu splendide coperţi de lemn – , pe care o datorăm Editurii Eleusis, este un foarte bun prilej să ne amintim de poetul Corneliu Popel.

„Uitarea“ acestuia este cu atît mai ciudată cu cît, la cei douăzeci şi opt de ani pe care-i avea la trecerea într-o lume mai bună, Corneliu Popel era deja un scriitor consacrat, cu o prezenţă auctorială puternică şi originală, chiar dacă omul ce purta poetul, se refugiase, la absolvirea facultăţii, într-un fel de navetă didactică pe drumuri de ţară, undeva în  judeţul Iaşi. Navetă ce s-a dovedit a fi „esenţială“, de vreme ce lirismul său a devenit parcă şi mai esenţializat, mai emblematic şi oracular.

Corneliu Popel începe să publice în presa culturală la 15 ani, în anii mici liberalizări a regimului comunist, este inclus, la nici 18 ani, în masiva Antologie a poeţilor ieşeni din 1968 şi debutează cu Fraţii mei blînzi în 1974, volum excelent primit de critica literară, care saluta un poet interesant şi promiţător. Promisiunea avea să fie confirmată trei ani mai tîrziu de volumul Aurea Saecula, de asemenea foarte bine primit. Îmi amintesc, de pildă, paginile dedicate poetului în revistele studenţeşti ieşene Dialog (fosta Alma Mater, la care poetul fusese redactor în studenţie) şi Opinia studenţească.

Ca mai june confrate, m-am simţit foarte onorat cînd lam cunoscut şi ori de cîte ori – prea rare prilejuri – am avut ocazia să schimbăm în fugă cîteva vorbe. Cel mai adesea despre poezie, de bună seamă, în legătură cu sensul căreia ne întîlneam în cele mai multe privinţe  La un an după moartea poetului, în 1979, avea să apară primul volum postum, pe care autorul apucase, totuşi, să-l îngrijească, Elogiul înţelepciunii, prin nimic inferior celorlalte, dacă nu cumva chiar superior acelora – deşi e foarte greu să faci asemenea ierarhizări în cazul unui autor care-şi găsise propria voce atît de timpuriu.

Trei volume excepţionale în cinci ani sînt suficiente pentru a impune un autor. În condiţii normale. Se pare că nu a avut şi nu am avut parte de condiţii normale de vreme ce, aproape brusc, un asemenea autor a intrat aproape în uitare, rămînînd mai mult în memoria prietenilor şi a colegilor de generaţie decît în cea a istoriei literare. Desigur, dispariţia sa prematură, atenţia pe care a atras-o asupra sa valul de la 1980, cu o poezie atît de diferită de cea lui Popel, pot explica în oarecare măsură uitarea, dar n-o justifică prin nimic.

În fond, în cuprinsul artelor, noul nu se substituie vechiului, ci doar se adaugă, oricît de „revoluţionar“ s-ar manifesta. În fond, apariţia lu  Mircea Cărtărescu nu anulează existenţa unor Virgil Mazilescu sau Daniel Turcea. În mod firesc, nici apariţia unor Danilov şi Lucian Vasiliu, ca să dau doar două nume importante din generaţia mea, de la Iaşi, nu sînt menite să-i pună în umbră pe un Mihai Ursachi sau Corneliu Popel. Şi încă primul a avut măcar şansa unei vieţi ceva mai lungi şi a unor prieteni mai fideli.

Volumul recent apărut la Galeriile Eleusis, o selecţie realizată de poetul cu formulă înrudită Ioan Es. Pop din manuscrisele puse cu amabilitate la dispoziţie de doamna Rodica Popel, so- ţia poetului, este întrutotul consubstanţial corpusului liric deja tipărit. Un volum care confirmă originalitatea şi pregnanţa vocii lirice pe care a lansat-o Corneliu Popel în poezia ultimei jumătăţi de veac.

Aceeaşi simplitate aparentă, asumată cu autentică umilitate, pentru a vorbi, cum nu se poate mai profund, despre lucrurile cu adevărat esenţiale: „Glasul frumos / al tău prin ziduri / cum sună înecat de boală / în veşnica mea amintire“, cum declară versur  e parcă premonitorii din poemul care deschide culegerea de faţă.

Sau ca în acest scurt, emblematic, Epitaf: „Mi-am zburat, se pare, ieri, creierul, ştii? / cu mutra mea de sinucigaş urît / nu mai făcusem nici două parale, / acuma stau în inimă- şi-atît“. Aş mai cita şi Amorul călăului, pentru impecabila prozodie, o altă calitate a poeziei lui Popel, de care autorul n-a abuzat, totuşi, pentru că nu îl interesau exerciţiile de virtuozitate decî t atunci cînd nu lezau autenticitatea: „Mustrări de conştiinţă, rămăşiţe / pe caldarîm şi-n crîşmele murdare / lovind cu capul în destin / aşa îmi vine o vreme de spînzurătoare// voi trubaduri cîntaţi amorul / acestei patimi mari de cavaler/ cu gravitatea cînd se înconjoară/ hamalul meu de gheţuri şi de cer// o glasu-acela spînzurî nd prea trist/ iubind un minstru în canale/ plebeu fugar într-un sicriu/ aşteptînd noaptea sunetelor triumfale“. Cred că puţinele versuri citate confirmă autenticitatea şi valoarea lui Corneliu Popel. Din păcate, ediţia de faţă, bibliofilă şi scumpă fiind, nu este decît la îndemîna unui număr foarte mic de cititori. Nu pot decît să sper că fie editura Eleusis, fie o altă editură se va gîndi şi la o edi]ie obişnuită a volumului şi, în viitor, cu puţin noroc, şi la o ediţie de opere complete. Corneliu Popel este un poet prea bun pentru a-l condamna la uitare.
