Timp de cinci ani la Darabani a locuit scriitorul şi publicistul Lucian Valea, nume care spune multe lumii culturale româneşti, dar prea puţine, din păcate, publicului larg.
Autor a douăsprezece cărţi de proză şi poezie, Valea a făcut parte dintr-o generaţie a cărei importanţă în istoria culturii româneşti a fost trunchiată de opresiunile din perioada comunistă.
Valea s-a afirmat ca o personalitate culturală de tradiţie clasică, având ca mentori nume grele ale culturii noastre: Lucian Blaga, George Călinescu, Tudor Vianu. A trăit în preajma lor anii importanţi ai formării sale ca scriitor. Despre relaţiile lui Lucian Valea cu aceste personalităţi şi multe altele găsim informaţii preţioase în cele două volume de memorialistică publicate de autor cu titlul “Oameni pe care i-am iubit”.
În cei cinci ani petrecuţi la Darabani, dar şi în cele trei decenii de după plecarea sa de aici, Lucian Valea a avut o contribuţie esenţială la activarea mişcării culturale locale, iniţiind importante proiecte de profil şi formând oameni de cultură valoroşi.
Lucian Valea s-a născut la 4 martie 1924, în satul Şanţ, judeţul Bistriţa. Numele sau adevărat a fost Alexandru Astaloşi, preschimbat în Lucian Valea odată cu debutul publicistic şi literar. “Lucian” este o mulţumire adusă mentorului său Lucian Blaga, iar “Valea” este, posibil, o evocare adusă Văii Rodnelor, pe care scriitorul a iubit-o atât de mult.
Lucian Valea şi-a făcut studiile liceale la Cluj şi Braşov şi a absolvit Facultatea de Filologie din Bucureşti, în 1949.
Debutează la “Tribuna” din Cluj şi este redactor la Gazeta Transilvaniei, între 1942 şi 1944. Împreună cu Gherghinescu Vania înfiinţează la Braşov revista Calviaturi, un caiet de poezie unde scriu nume importante ale literaturii române, între care Lucian Blaga şi Tudor Arghezi.
În 1941 tipăreşte la Buzău placheta de debut “Mătănii pentru fata ardeleană”, urmată, la un an, de “Întoarcerea lângă pământ” (Braşov).
Odată cu schimbarea regimului politic, Lucian Valea are de suferit. Este trimis în temniţele politice ale vremii, făcând şi 4 ani de canal. Eliberat din închisoare, începe o viaţă de pribeag prin România, suportând nemeritat consecinţele unei false vinovăţii. Vreme de 10-15 ani colaborează sporadic la ziare şi reviste obscure, fiindu-i interzise apariţiile la revistele şi editurile importante.
Redebutează editorial în 1972, cu ajutorul lui Marin Preda, cu volumul “Întoarcerea lui Don Quijote”, scris în mare parte la Darabani.
La Darabani locuieşte între 1964 şi 1969, fiind exilat politic de regimul comunist. În acest timp reuşeşte să creeze aici o atmosferă culturală şi, mai ales, literară, nemaiîntâlnite până atunci. Influenţa sa binefăcătoare se simte şi în învăţământ, punând cu adevărat în practică ideea de cultură generală autentică.
În jurul său se adună mulţi tineri cu veleităţi literare, care, împreună cu mentorul lor, scot revista culturală Hyperion (1968), distincă cu locul 3 în ţară la concursul revistelor şcolare de profil. Despre Hyperion scriu publicaţii importante (România literară, Revista Argeş etc.) şi oameni de cultură cunoscuţi (Alexandru Husar, Şt. Augustin Doinaş etc.). În revistă publică tinere condeie locale care, mai târziu, vor deveni membri ai Uniunii Scriitorilor (Dumitru Ţiganiuc, Corneliu Popel, Victor Teişanu, Valeriu Imbir, Anca Cârligeanu etc.).
Darabani a însemnat pentru Lucian Valea o perioadă de redresare morală şi intelectuală şi reîmprospătarea resurselor de inspiraţie, după cum însuşi Valea declară în repetate rânduri.
După plecarea din Darabani, legătura sa cu această localitate nu a avut de suferit, ci dimpotrivă. Aici şi-a lansat cu succes majoritatea cărţilor, aici venea să-şi întâlnească prietenii şi colaboratorii de altădată. În semn de consideraţie, administraţia locală i-a dat numele său aleii pe care Lucian Valea a locuit în Darabani.
Acelaşi rol de ferment şi stimulator l-a jucat şi la Botoşani, unde a locuit după plecarea de la Darabani, timp de două decenii. Acolo a înfiinţaţ cenaclul “Mihai Eminescu” al Uniunii Scriitorilor şi revista “Caiete botoşănene”. Tot aici a avut un rol determinant în afirmarea literară a unor talente locale precum Dumitru Ţiganiuc, Gellu Dorian, Constantin Bojescu, Dumitru Necşanu, Dumitru Ignat etc.
