Pentru cei mai tineri, care nu erau de față atunci, dar și pentru cei mai copți, care vor să-și aducă aminte cum a fost, am scotocit prin arhivele Darabani.org și am strâns câteva filmări de colecție de la vizita Regelui Mihai I al României la Darabani.
Se întâmpla în vara lui 1997, în vremuri complicate și, într-un fel, boeme pentru toți românii. Treceam de la comunismul de care ne săturasem mai toți la capitalismul pe care nu-l înțelegeam niciunul. Ușor de influențat pentru că totul ne era nou și vocali în păreri pentru că dădeam pe-afară de democrație, luam foc la orice întâmplare deosebită despre care citeam în ziare sau auzeam la televizor.
Anunțul vizitei Familiei Regale la Darabani a făcut, așa cum era de așteptat, urbea să clocotească. Nu erau mulți simpatizanți ai monarhiei în nord la vremea aceea. Autoritățile locale și județene, ba chiar și opinia publică din Darabani, s-au opus vehement la a face concesii regaliștilor cu prilejul evenimentului. Mulți dintre mai marii orașului declarau că nu vor să aibă de-a face cu evenimentul, iar consiliul local s-a opus difuzării imnului regal la sosirea oaspeților.
Ce avea să se întâmple însă în ziua vizitei avea să intre direct în istoria și în folclorul locurilor. Peste o mie de oameni, dacă nu mai mulți, s-au adunat în fața primăriei: copii, tineri, adulți și bătrâni, unii veniți din curiozitate, alții din dorința de a lua parte la cea mai importantă vizită făcută vreodată de un suveran al României la Darabani. Însă, după cum aveam să constatăm la fața locului, cei mai mulți veniseră din bucuria sinceră de a întâlni Familia Regală a României. Flori, urale și o mie de fețe înseninate au umplut în ziua aceea centrul orașului.
Primarul de atunci al Darabaniului, Emil Rîznic, a intrat în legendă cu o replică pe care însă nu a rostit-o, după cum ne arată filmarea originală. Și eu, copil pe atunci și așezat la numai un metru de microfonul de unde s-au rostit scurtele discursuri oficiale, îmi aminteam că primarul l-ar fi întâmpinat pe Rege cu surprinzătorul „Bine ați venit, Domnule Rege”. Caseta mi-a arătat însă altceva: „îi urăm bun venit domnului…. Majestatea Sa Regele Mihai” au fost vorbele de deschidere a ceremoniei. Aveam 14 ani atunci și până când am revăzut filmul vizitei au mai trecut încă 14, timp în care cuvintele, nepotrivite – e drept, ale primarului au luat o altă formă în memoria colectivă.
După ce coloana oficială s-a oprit în centrul orașului, Regele și Regina, însoțiți de Principesa Sofia, au gustat din pâinea tradițională și au băut o gură de vin moldovenesc, apoi au salutat îndelung mulțimea. Au intrat mai apoi în clădirea Primăriei și și-au lăsat semnăturile în Cartea de Onoare a orașului. Poetul Victor Teișanu, unul dintre marii simpatizanți locali ai monarhiei, i-a povestit Majestății Sale despre telegrama trimisă de către tatăl Regelui Mihai, Regele Carol al II-lea, autorităților dărăbănene în 1937 ca răspuns la invitația acestora de a lua parte la sărbătorirea centenarului Darabanilor.
Vizita Regelui și a Familiei Sale a avut puterea să transforme, măcar și pentru o zi, Darabaniul într-o comunitate de oameni capabili să se bucure împreună. Consilierii locali care se opuneau cu câteva zile înainte vizitei se înghesuiau să stea cât mai aproape de Familia Regală, dărăbănenii care și-anunțaseră dezinteresul total pentru eveniment se găseau acum în stradă, cu ceilalți, scandând numele Regelui.
Iar noi toți, copii sau mai copți la vremea aceea, am rămas cu amintirea unui Rege, a unei Regine și a unei Prințese care au fost la noi Acasă.
