Puţini îşi mai amintesc astăzi de Nicolae Munteanu, un pictor de biserici dărăbănean în mare vogă la sfârşitul veacului XIX. Era cunoscut în rândul preoţilor din judeţul Dorohoi şi adesea solicitat în parohii să execute pictura murală a locaşurilor sfinte.
În 1895 Nicolae Munteanu reuşeşte să picteze două biserici.
Prima e cea din Ivancăuţi, iar următoarea cea din Bivolul Mare (astăzi Viişoara). Cu 10 ani mai devreme, adică în 1885, bisericile din Corneşti şi Conceşti s-au împodobit cu pictură completă. Autorul era Ion Munteanu din Darabani. Comparând informaţiile de care dispunem considerăm că este vorba de una şi aceeaşi persoană cu Nicolae Munteanu. Varianta cu doi fraţi, ambii pictori bisericeşti, pare mai greu de acceptat. Cum şi mai greu de admis este că vorbim de două persoane diferite fără vreun grad de rudenie. Prenumele acesta variabil, Ion şi Nicolae, înseamnă fie o greşeală de transcriere documentară, fie urmarea voinţei autorului, care nu trebuie explicată de către noi.
Oricum, e important să se ştie că în ultimele decenii ale veacului XIX, la Darabani a trăit şi a lucrat din plin, cu gloria smerită a artei liturgice, un pictor bisericesc. Despre care am dori să aflăm cât mai multe.
