Începând cu prima atestare documentară, Darabaniul este pomenit cu diverse prilejuri în scrierile şi documentele oficiale ale unor personalităţi marcante ale vremii. Este important să amintim de cei zece domnitori care au făcut referiri directe la oraşul nostru: Petru Rareş (1546), Bogdan Lăpuşneanu (1569), Moisei-Vodă, Miron Barnovschi, Vasile Lupu (1635), Dabija Vodă (1163), Duca Vodă (1669), Mihai Racoviţă (1726), Scarlat Calimachi (1815), Mihail Sturdza (1837).
În istoria recentă, Ferdinand aminteşte în 1919 de Darabani cu prilejul acordării cetăţeniei române către doi comunitari evrei, iar Carol al 2-lea mulţumeşte printr-o telegramă din 1937 pentru invitaţia la centenarul târgului Darabani.
Cel mai important eveniment legat de Casa Regală şi Darabani se petrece în 1998, când Regele Mihai I face o vizită la Darabani, împreună cu regina Ana şi principesa Sofia.
Cu prilejul Procesului de la Darabani, Eminescu şi B.P. Haşdeu pomenesc numele oraşului în scrierile lor, iar Iorga consideră că dacă pledoariile de la proces ar fi traduse într-o limbă de circulaţie ele ar putea deveni adevarate modele pentru juriştii din toată Europa. Însuşi Kogălniceanu, ministrul român de externe, este somat să prezinte o informare legată de evenimentele de la Darabani, la sfârşitul Congresului de la Berlin (1878), în faţa miniştrilor de externe din ţările participante.
Alte personalităţi ale lumii literare şi artistice care fac referire, au legături sau poposesc la Darabani sunt: Miron Costin, proprietarul unei părţi din moşia Darabani la jumătatea sec. al XVII-lea; Mihai Eminescu, care culege doina de cătănie “Foaie verde mintă creaţă”; Maiorescu, avocatul evreilor în procesul de la Darabani şi face referire la localitate în jurnalul său; Ion Pillat, care venea deseori la Darabani în calitate de preşedinte al Consiliului Judeţean Dorohoi; poetul Nicolae Tăutu, care ne informează într-o poezie (Omagiul lui Enescu) că marele compozitor a trecut prin Darabani oferind gratuit o lecţie de interpretare la vioară unor lăutari locali.
Apoi, Voiculescu şi Horia Furtună, prieteni ai poetului Ion Pillat, poposeau adesea la Darabani, în drumul către conacul de la Miorcani; Alexandru Lungu, scriitor din Miorcani, pomeneşte în scrierile sale (de ex: “ Hotar” şi “ Moarte maruntă”) secvenţe de viaţă din Darabani. Într-un capitol final din “România pitorească” Alexandru Vlahuţă pomeneşte de Darabani, poetul Lucian Valea a locuit o vreme la Darabani unde a pus bazele unei adevărate şcoli de literatură care a permis afirmarea unor poeşi locali, deveniţi membri ai Uniunii Scriitorilor.
Scriitorul născut la Herţa , Benjamen Fundoianu venea de multe ori la Darabani pentru a culege poezii populare, iar în 1900 părinţii Elenei Lupescu obţin dreptul de a deschide la Darabani prima farmacie a târgului. E de presupus că viitoarea amantă şi apoi soţie a lui Carol II şi-a petrecut câţiva ani din copilărie în Darabani.
