La începutul secolului al XIX-lea, cândva între 1811 și 1812, la Concești (6 km de Darabani) s-a făcut o descoperire arheologică uluitoare. O parte dintre obiectele găsite atunci sunt păstrate și astăzi la Muzeul Ermitaj din Sankt Petersburg, în timp ce celorlalte piese ale tezaurului de la Concești li s-a pierdut urma.
Istoricul Alexandru Odobescu ne relatează într-ale sale „Note de călătorie” episodul descoperirii „mormântului crăiesc” de la Concești:
[…] un băiat de 13 ani, numit Vasile al Pachiței, din cătunul Langa, împreună cu alți copii din sat, păscând oile pe coasta stângă a pîrîului Podriga […] aflară într-o zi, subt o surpătură proaspătă a malului, o tablă rotundă de argint și mai multe pietre scumpe, precum rubine și smaragde. Copiii obținură pe acele pietricele covrigi și smochine de la un evreu din Darabani, dar proprietarii moșiei, fiind îndată înștiințați, puseră să caute printre năruiturile malului, și găsiră […] o boltă zidită de piatră cioplită și pardosită cu lespezi, în care se văzu un mormînt cu osemintele unui om, înconjurate de numeroase și bogate podoabe, precum și un schelet de cal.
Se pare că în „mormântul crăiesc”, pe lângă osemintele „craiului” și ale calului său credincios, s-ar fi găsit un arc cu săgeți, o spadă, un corn „buciumător”, un sceptru și un scut, „toate de argint, decorate cu poleiuri și pietre prețioase”. În aceeași criptă s-ar fi aflat un coif aurit, cu o coroană de aur împrejur, dar și statuetele unui cloști cu pui de aur.
Se pare că descoperitorii tezaurului au luat acasă două catarame de aur de la șaua calului, dar și mai multe pahare de aur, „din care au avut până în anii din urmă două, pe care le-au stricat spre a le preface în alte obiecte”.
Din relatările vremii, consemnate în studiile lui Odobescu și Pârvan, mai aflăm că mormântul adăpostea trei obiecte prețioase, foarte bine conservate și care astăzi pot fi văzute la muzeul Ermitaj din Petersburg. Primul – o tavă de argint (discus), sculptată cu portretele unor centauri și ale unor soldați luptându-se cu fiare sălbatice. Al doilea – un vas de argint (situla), de forma unei găletușe, purtând la exterior trei basoreliefuri cu scene din mitologia greacă. Al treilea – o urnă din argint aurit (hydria), de aproape jumătate de metru înălțime și grea de 5 kilograme, ornată cu centauri și scene de vânătoare.
Istoricii afirmă că aceste obiecte aparțin secolului al II-lea după Hristos. Dacă despre trei vase se poate spune fără îndoială că sunt de proveniență romană sau grecească, adevărul despre sorgintea proprietarului lor, căpetenia îngropată la Concești, este disputat între două teorii.
Prima teorie spune că podoabele ar fi putut fi luate drept pradă de război de către un trib mongolic, după lupte cu romanii, și apoi îngropate alături de căpetenia tribului, după obicei. Cealaltă versiune afirmă că mormântul aparține neamurilor de barbari care au jefuit imperiul bizantin la începuturile creștinismului.
Deocamdată dovezi clare pentru veridicitatea descoperirii de la Concești avem numai în cazul celor trei vase romane sau grecești păstrate la Ermitaj, în timp ce despre existența podoabelor aurite și a armelor de luptă (care ar avea sorginte mongolică, dacă e să ne luăm după descrierile lăsate moștenire de contemporanii descoperirii) istoria nu păstrează niciun argument de netăgăduit. În aceste condiții, e mai probabil ca „mormântul crăiesc” să fie al unei căpetenii dacice din nord, al uneia a grupurilor de legionari romani sau a goților care, în primele secole ale erei noastre, și-au întins pentru o vreme împărăția de la Caucaz până la Tisa.
În tot cazul, prin cele trei vase de argint păstrate astăzi la Ermitaj, dar și prin descrierile amănunțite asupra mormântului păstrate în însemnările vremii, „mormântul crăiesc” rămâne pentru specialiști una dintre descoperirile arheologice importante de pe teritoriul României de azi. Tezaurul de la Concești, împreună cu descoperirile arheologice de la Teioasa și Horodiștea, este atestarea a peste două milenii de viață pe meleagurile dărăbănene.
