“În 1856 apărea la Hertford, în Anglia, o frumoasă ediţie de poezie românească, tipărită cu alfabet latin, când limba română nu se instituţionalizase înca oficial. Sunt adunate creaţii reprezentative ale momentului paşoptis, lirică intimistă, purtând semnăturile lui Alecsandri, Bolintineanu, Creţianu, Eliade Rădulescu, Boliac, balada ” Mioara” şi altele.
Lucrarea, tipărită în condiţii de excepţie, într-un tiraj foarte mic de vreun bun prieten al României, este prefaţată în limba franceză, de profesorul Stephen Austin. Puţin cunoscută, această ediţie de “Fleurs de la Roumanie” este mândria colecţiei Victor Teişanu de la Darabani. Mai deţine cineva oare vreun exemplar în România?”.
Cartea cu pricina, “Fleurs de la Roumanie: ou Recueil de poesies roumains, anciennes et moderne”, Hertford, Angleterre, 1856, este o antologie de poezie românească tipărită cu alfabet latin. Apărea în 1856, când limba română nu se instituţionalizase încă oficial şi înaintea faimosului “Lepturariu…”, alcătuit de către Aron Pumnul la Cernăuţi. “Fleurs de la Roumanie” selectează riguros doar pozie din creaţia reprezentativă a epocii paşoptiste.
Există un singur indiciu în limba franceză: “imprime par Stephen Austin, Hertford, Angleterre, 1856″, în rest prea puţine date despre ea. Era o premieră absolută pentru poezia românească şi se tipărea în condiţii grafice excepţionale. În “Istoria literaturii…” a lui Călinescu, nu există nici o menţiune oricât de sumară cu privinţă la această antologie. Se pare că marele encicloped n-a cunoscut această ediţie ce grupa în 164 de pagini, toţi marii poeţi ai momentului. Cele mai multe poezii îi aparţin lui Alecsandri, apoi Bolintineanu, Alexandrescu, Creţeanu, Eliade şi Boliac. Sunt inserate şi câteva balade din colecţia lui Alecsandri, între care Mioriţa( aici cu titlul de “Meoara”), aflată deci la a doua publicare în româneşte. Volumul dezvăluie chenare măiestrit colorate cu ornamente miniaturale şi vignete splendide. Fiecare majusculă începătoare de poezie este o mică bijuterie grafică. Cele 3 extremităţi ale paginilor aflate în continuarea legăturii sunt aurite.
